Base Camp

The studio list for 4th year is up, and I have just moved into my new home for my next and final year here. Im happy to be down in the sculpture dept again, its nice and quiet and I dont mind being out the way. Theres less people down here = more space for me.

Its not much just now, Ive just moved the work from my summer studio across, and I will get the technician to build me a partition so Ive got more wall space. The only downside is that the studios are quite draughty in winter, its only the first week of September and I can already feel the chill in here. Still, its an excuse to buy lots more wooly jumpers. As I learned last year, the key to survival down here is LAYERS!!

Ive got a great tutor, and I cant wait to get the semester started properly.

Rauschenberg

If you haven't already been, I highly recommend getting yourself along to the Rauschenberg exhibition thats currently showing at The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. Inverleith house is a beautiful exhibition space, and on a nice day the gardens are a lovely way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

"I usually work in a direction until I know how to do it, then I stop, At the time that I am bored or understand — I use those words interchangeably — another appetite has formed. A lot of people try to think up ideas. I’m not one. I’d rather accept the irresistible possibilities of what I can’t ignore."

Scribblin

Last night I FINALLY found the set of lithograph prints I did at Easter this year. I have been searching for these for months, and had finally given up hope and assumed they had accidentally been chucked in the skip during one of my many studio clear outs last semester. The loss of these prints was frustrating because it meant I couldn't complete something I had high hopes for. Well, at last they have turned up hidden away "safely" inside a Jessops photo envelope and I can finally get on with my original plan.

Looking at them again after several months tucked away, I am still happy with them. Im glad I chose to print them onto newsprint. The faded, and contrasty images are perfect for what im trying to achieve.

Ive also had a little bit of a rethink about them, and so far Ive added some text using the lovely pink gloss paint that I have become obsessed with the past week or so, and as soon as I get a nice dry day I can get on with the second part of the plan (fingers crossed for tomorrow).

Matchbox camera

Its been a VERY long time since I made a pinhole camera. Found a great little tutorial online for a simple 35mm camera made from a matchbox, so I spent a rainy afternoon building my first pinhole in quite a while.

So far its looking pretty good, and I got out and about shooting with it this evening. I will put it in for processing tomorrow, and fingers crossed I will have some interesting results.

Scottish Fiction

It isn’t in the mirror, it isn’t on the page

It’s a red hearted vibration
Pushing through the walls of dark imagination
Finding no equation
There’s a red road rage,
But it’s not road rage
It’s asylum seekers engulfed by a grudge

Scottish friction, Scottish fiction

It isn’t in the castle, it isn’t in the mist
It’s a calling of the waters as they break to show
The new black death with reactors aglow
Do you think your security can keep you in purity?
You will not shake us off
Above or below

Frames and Reflections

I am fascinated with layers, frames and reflections. Ive been working on a small series of photos over the past week or so, and I will be submitting at least two of them to this years Generator Projects Members Show. Here are two of my favourites so far:
